Sarto per signora

Dr Moulineaux has been married for six months to Yvonne d’Aigreville. One night, however, the doctor did not return at home because he stayed at the Opera Ball in an attempt to seduce one of his clients, Suzanne Aubin, and as if that were not enough, he forgot his house keys. Early in the morning, Moulineaux is surprised by his wife and in an attempt to justify his behaviour, he is forced to tell her that he has been at the bedside of a very sick friend, Bassinet. By coincidence, Bassinet shows up a minute later at the doctor’s house to try to convince him to rent apartments of his own. Amidst the general confusion, Moulineaux ends up renting one of the apartments, which had previously been occupied by a dressmaker, to meet secretly with Suzanne Aubin.
The second act takes place in what used to be the dressmaker’s shop. The door is badly damaged because Bassinet had forcibly thrown out the dressmaker who lived in the apartment and this generates a whole series of misunderstandings and comings and goings of characters who should not be there, including Mr. Aubin and his mistress, Bassinet, Moulineaux’s mother-in-law and Yvonne herself. Moulineaux tries to cope with it as he can by telling those who don’t know him that he is a dressmaker.
In the third act, after long negotiations, Moulineaux finally succeeds in restoring peace, and each couple regains the serenity they so longed for.
