Daughter of a laundress Amélie Pochet, entertaining high level relationships that make her rise socially becomes Amélie d’Avranches. At first, Amélie is Etienne’s mistress who is about to leave for military service. Before his departure, Etienne entrusts Amélie to his best friend, Marcel. Meanwhile, Marcel’s godfather arrives and mistakes Amélie for his girlfriend. So as not to disillusion the good godfather, Amélie agrees to pretend to be Marcel’s girlfriend. But what was supposed to happen happens and one morning Amélie wakes up in the same bed as Marcel. The godfather surprises the two of them in a condition that leaves no doubt about their feelings, and therefore expects the marriage to take place quickly. The godfather, however, unintentionally informed Etienne of his misfortune and he immediately returned and vowed to take revenge. Etienne let Amélie marry Marcel, making his friend believe that the ceremony in the city hall was fake and that it was orchestrated by him with the sole purpose of mocking the godfather. After many other complications, Marcel succeeds in getting rid of Amélie by letting her be caught in the act of adultery with Etienne.
