We are in a castle: Maurice is about to embrace ecclesiastical life, even if the Countess Mother does not appreciate this decision very much. A cousin of Maurice’s who secretly loves him also lives in the castle. In a rather fortuitous way Maurice meets Etiennette, a prostitute with whom he falls in love to the point of asking her to marry him. In the end, however, it will be Etiennette herself who will make him understand that women like her are not made for marriage, and Maurice will decide to marry her cousin, between the general approval of the family. An unusual text, but successful and with vitriolic jokes, in which Feydeau also mocks religious principles, including chastity.
