Il viaggio del Signor Perrichon

Mr. Perrichon, a man who ignores what modesty is, sets off with his wife and daughter on a trip to Switzerland. Also on the trip are two young men, Armand and Daniel, who are pursuing the family because they have fallen in love with the girl.
During a hike, Perrichon falls disastrously into a precipice and is rescued by Armand, for whom he begins to have great dislike. Daniel, understanding the man’s character, allows himself to fall into a precipice and is rescued by him in order to win his affection. However, a former commander of the Zouaves, always ready for a duel, and a close friend of Perrichon’s, always ready to ask him for money, also intrude into the affair.
Labiche speaks of gratitude and ingratitude by creating an ignorant character for whom the audience ends up feeling sympathy precisely because of the absurdity of the reasoning on which his convictions are based.
