Pélleas e Mélisande e Arianna e Barbablù

Pelléas and Mélisande and Ariadne and Bluebeard are two operas that are distinguished for having been conceived in different periods of Maurice Maeterlinck’s life and represent the passage from darkness to light, in the author’s vision. In Maeterlinck’s work, the characters are not prey to uncontrollable passions; on the contrary, everything is only hinted at, suggested, represented metaphorically; there is never a direct explication of feelings as happens, for example, in Shakespearean theater.

The volume contains the texts of Pelléas and Mélisande and Arianna and Barbablù in a new italian translation and compares them by analyzing the evolution of Maurice Maeterlinck’s work also through numerous critical articles and in-depth essays, as well as the versions by Claude Debussy and Paul Dukas in the first performances at Teatro alla Scala in Milan.
