The banker, on his way to the club, told his wife that he was busy at the board meeting; to avoid problems he decided to send her a letter explaining that the board would last all night, and he also wrote a letter to Rigolin, another friend of his, who he told to join him with his new conquest Emilie. Emilie, however, is also the name of the banker&#8217;s maid; due to a series of misunderstandings, the two letters are mixed up and so the banker&#8217;s wife, followed by the maid, shows up at the restaurant. Gentillac recognizes in his friend&#8217;s wife the woman on the train, while it turns out that the masked woman accompanied by the banker is a skanky old courtesan.
