The story of a man forced by events to disguise himself as a woman will later be a subject much exploited on the theatre scene and also in films. It is one of the few texts by Labiche that also shows a little girl, with colourful language and country manners, destined to become the object of contention between Sabouleux, who raised her after his wife&#8217;s escape with a cuirassier, and the real parents who had entrusted her, as soon as she was born, to Sabouleux&#8217;s wife to be her nurse.
